Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Храм Спаса на Крови
The name refers to the fact that it is built on the place where Czar Alexander II was assasinated.
It is one of the major landmarks of St Petersburg.  Because it is so spectacular, it has earned its own blog posting here.

It is relatively recent, built in 1883.

I bought a ticket to see the interior and was amazed at the mosaics. The entire interior, including pillars and ceilings, was covered with detailed mosaics made with teeny tiny (I am holding my hand up for you to see with my thumb and forefinger about 1/4 inch apart) pieces. Just amazing. However, very difficult to photograph because of the sun coming in the windows causing glare.
