The Hermitage

The Hermitage. Four Palaces, 3 million items (only 10% on display). One word: Amazing.

I was so excited to tour the Hermitage, and so sad that our time was limited. The Russians claim that to see everything would take nine years. We spent three or four hours, walking on marble floors. This is a massive art collection, begin by Catherine the Great, who bought every major European art collection that came on the market during her lifetime. Later czars increased the collection and then, after the revolution, the Bolsheviks seized private collections and added their contents to the Hermitage collection. The website has a great section about how the collection was packed up and sent to the Ural Mountains during the Seige of Leningrad.
