Helsinki Market

Helsinki is a very interesting city, but we especially enjoyed the market. The city center market is down by the South Harbor (Helsinki has a bunch of harbors, since it is on a peninsula...).  There are lots of little tourist stalls with imported souvenirs, but there are also the food stalls, where the fruit looked fabulous, especially all the berries.

Also notice the piles of peas. The Finns eat fresh peas from the pod as a snack, so I bought myself a bag.

But then... we discovered the fish stalls.  They featured pieces cut from whole salmon, fresh vegetables. However, this is what caught Donald's eye:  Rove kastikkeella. this is a small fish, like smelt

They are spiced and cooked in these propane-powered woks, then delivered in little cardboard bowls. Delicious!!  We were warned to be careful -- the seagulls will snatch them from your hands, if you are not careful.
